Bifold doors have become an increasingly popular choice amongst homeowners seeking to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of their living spaces. One of the most critical steps in the installation process of a bifold door is the toe and heeling procedure. This plays a pivotal role in maintaining proper alignment and performance of the door leaves. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the importance of toe and heeling bifold doors and provide a step-by-step walkthrough on how to toe and heel a bifold door like a professional.
Understanding Why You Need to Toe and Heel Bifold Doors
Bi folding doors, with their expansive glass panels that can reach heights of up to 3000mm and widths of 1200mm. Therefore, they are inherently heavy. This weight distribution poses a significant challenge, as the door panels can drop or catch on the bottom track if not properly addressed. This is where the toe and heeling process comes into play.
The toe and heeling procedure involves strategically positioning packers between the glass and the door frame so you can distribute the weight of the glazing panels into the correct areas. By doing so, the glass is able to support its own weight, preventing the door from sagging in the track. This not only ensures smooth and effortless operation but also guarantees the long-term functionality of the bifold system.
What You’ll Need
Before embarking on the toe and heeling journey, it’s essential to gather the necessary tools and materials. You’ll need the following items:
· Packers
· Glazing paddle
· Gasket snips
· Glazing mallet
With these tools at hand, you’ll be ready to tackle the toe and heeling process!
Step-by-Step Guide to Toe and Heeling a Bifold Door

To ensure the smooth operation and longevity of your bifold door, it is crucial to correctly toe and heel the door. Properly aligning and supporting the heavy bi-folding door not only ensures its correct and sustained operation but also prevents issues with the locking mechanism. This step-by-step guide will help you achieve the perfect alignment for your bifold door.
Step 1: Positioning the First Packers
Begin the toe and heeling process at the fixed end of the bifold system, working your way towards the traffic door. Start by placing a 5mm packer horizontally and another one vertically in the bottom corner.
Step 2: Adding the Glazing
Next, repeat the above step and add packers to the opposite top corner, diagonally from the initial packers.
Step 3: Levering the Glass
Using your glazing paddle, create a gap between the glass and the top of the frame. Apply gentle pressure to lift the frame back into its level position, and then fill the gap with additional packers until the glass sits tightly within the frame. Repeat this process at the side where the vertical packer was placed.
Step 4: Securing the Bottom Corner
Repeat the previous step in the bottom corner where you placed the first packers, again making sure that the glass sits tightly within the frame.
Step 5: Completing the Bifold
Proceed to the remaining panels, following the same procedure. This zigzag approach ensures that the weight of the glass is evenly distributed throughout the bifold system.
Step 6: Installing the Beads and Gaskets
With the toe and heeling process complete, it’s time to fit the beads and gaskets!
Step 7: Checking for Smooth Operation
Once the beads and gasket are fitted, ensure that the bifold door can move freely without any catching. But, if adjustments are needed, now is the time to make them.
The Importance of Proper Toe and Heeling
Executing the toe and heeling process correctly is paramount for the smooth and long-lasting operation of your bifolding door. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can be confident that the weight of the glass will be evenly distributed, so you prevent any sagging, sticking, or jamming issues.
Proper toe and heeling not only maintains the correct alignment of the bifold but also helps to preserve the functionality of the locking mechanism, ensuring effortless opening and closing for years to come.
